Meskel is one of the most striking celebrations of the year, centered on the Demera, a great bonfire lit as the sun goes down.

Meskel falls on September 27 most years (September 28 in some). It comes shortly after the New Year, in the bright season after the rains.
What it means
Meskel marks the finding of the True Cross. The Demera bonfire recalls the smoke that, by tradition, pointed to where the cross was buried. UNESCO has recognized the festival as intangible cultural heritage.
