Harrar Coffee and Roastery
Coffee RoasterWashington, DC
Abol, tona, bereka
The story goes that a goatherd named Kaldi noticed his goats dancing after eating red berries in the highlands of Kaffa. Legend or not, Ethiopia is where coffee comes from, and buna is still how people gather.
A full ceremony takes its time: green beans roasted in a pan, ground by hand, brewed in a clay jebena and poured in three rounds, abol, tona and bereka, with incense in the air and something to snack on. These are the places to find it, or at least a very good cup.
